Welcome! I started out just the same way. I was an Army wife and I sewed my curtains and stuff where ever we moved then I got to Kansas and ran into some ladies with a quilt and it's been six years and I love it. I still consider myself a beginner. I will say that I joined my local quilt guild and they were scary at first but took me under their wings and showed me how to become a quilter and I haven't looked back.
