Kathy, my understanding is that pattern designers don't have the right to forbid this. There have been discussions on the Qoard in the past about this and this has been the general consensus -- certainly if you're not planning to going into production on an industrial scale. Making a few to sell on an ad hoc basis shouldn't be a problem.
PS your idea of 'gifting' them with a quilt is a good one - here in the UK a while back there were issues about what could and couldn't be sold under the Sunday trading laws - for example, you could buy a magazine but not a book (including the Bible), you could buy a cabbage but not a can of paint, etc. Some DIY stores were offering cabbages at £20 each, with a free tin of paint thrown in! :mrgreen: They made their point and now the law is revised. :-D
