I always pre-wash my fabrics before quilting, except precuts like charm squares. This is especially important for colours like red, blue and black. I can't take the risk of them bleeding onto the surrounding colours after spending months on a beautiful quilt. To prevent fraying, I do a small triangular cut on each corner. This works for me.
