There is a strip piecing method for making tumbling blocks without the set in Y seam. It is called "Not your grandmother's tumbling blocks". There was a book but I believe it is now out of print. Amazon no longer has it available. If you google it there are you tube videos and I am sure on line tutorials on how to do it. You could also see if your library could get the book or you could try to pick it up used.
