That's one of my problems too, since I'm new and my stash isn't as "filled in" as the old-timers, I never know how much to get of each, I tend to lean toward 1 to 2 yards myself, but it depends on how much money I have at the time.
I do this same thing....always a $$ issue. My best advice to you in building a stash is to shop garage sales, wash the fabric and always add Febreeze for Laundry. Is much easier to build up a stash this way and then purchase fabric to match when you have extra funds.
