The numbers are laid out that way simply to help you spread the small sew-on pieces out in a pleasing manner, so you don't have the same pictures next to each other or close. It's a function of how the little pockets are printed. There are no rules about what goes where. If you are working with a child to sew on one a day, it might be fun for the child to locate where the next one is supposed to go, as well. The small pieces are correspondingly numbered.

But where they go is really up to you. Lay them out in a configuration that pleases YOU! :-)

BTW, Cindy finished this year's Advent calendar and had a lot of fun with it. She did some trapunto work around the figures at the top, and did a little embellishing as well as batting the pockets. It came out really nice.

OMG I just bought a few of those for Christmas gifts, they are the most beautiful Advent Calendar I have ever seen.
