I use YLI silk thread for hand applique. I buy it from Janet Smith at this site: http://www.textileart.com/YLI100.php...9ucu81qp10ard1
Her prices are good and she sells the 1000-meter mini-cones as well as the spools.

Superior threads has also come out with a silk thread, but I haven't tried it yet.
