OK - here goes. This is Carol's directions, hopefully with pictures:
Four to Nine Patch
1. Start with four, 5 inch squares; two of each color.
2. Sew together with ¼ inch seams.

3. Cut 1½ inch from both sides of each seam line.
(see below)
4. Rotate the 4 pieces that have two narrow strips of each color ½ turn.
Do not move the center 4-patch

5. Sew the block back together.
