You sew 5" squares - three across and three down
so you have a nine patch square. Then you cut it
right down the middle vertically and horizontally.
That gives you four blocks. Now you can arrange
them any way you want. You can use 4 darks,
and 5 lights for each 9" block. Or you can just
use three materials, putting the main print in the
corners of the nine patch, and use the same material
for the 5 squares, then use an other one for the center.
The center block becomes your little block. Look
on line, key in Disappearing Nine patch, there are pictures
