....another thought. You might consider putting the t shirt motifs onto the rag backing in an applique fashion. Stack your layers together. Cut the t shirt and machine applique it to the center of the layers. Could add decorative stitch around the edges. Then you would not cut into the knitted fabric and the woven would give the ragged edge.
