I think it is entirely different to cover a lace table cloth than it is to cover a quilted one. I have several table cloths that my grandmother tatted and /or crocheted, and they are beautiful. And they too are covered with plastic when used. For one thing, you can't just pop them into the washer and dryer if they get spilled on. A quilted one you can. I wouldn't cover a quilted or fabric table cloth, but one that is lace is a whole 'nuther kettle of fish.
