I've never used solid white, only white-on-white (for many of the reasons stated in other posts, including the fact that it hides less-than-perfect quilting), but I'm not thrilled with the painted on look either. It finally occurred to me to use the "wrong side" as the right side...a bit softer effect.

I also agree that the white-on-whites I've used seem, well, flimsy. Maybe I need to search for a better quality? Does such a thing exist, or is it the nature of the design?
