Sometimes a pattern has lots of pieces (means lots of seams) so I have used a good quality flannel. Don't use the cheappie kind, it has to have a good feel to it and the runners will be great. Not too thick, but with some heft to them. Try one and see what you think. It is also great to use for coasters. :-D
