i agree with you about the strange shapes that you can end up with when you buy pre-cuts. that's one of the reasons i don't care for them.
Have you tried cutting that number of pieces from a FQ?
Theoretically, it should "work" - but in actuality, I would probably only end up with 88 two-inch squares if I used a ruler - maybe it would "work" with a shape cut (?) ruler?
and only about 56 2.5 inch squares.
(Not trying to be difficult - just know what happens when I cut)

i totally agree. between what you lose in the cutting and what you lose in the loose threads at the edges before you even begin, there's no real way to do as this article says. when you lay it out on paper, it can be done, but not in real life on fabric.
and i won't get into the whole washing-shrinking issue here.
still, i WAS surprised at what you can get out of them. i don't buy them so i never thought it through. whatever i need them for, they're never enough.
no, i never tried it. i never saw a fq that was on the money.
