I think you have answered your own question - in my opinion it is too intense and is fighting with the centre panel. If you like the bargello sort of look, I would suggest a simpler Seminole pattern to go on the panels, using some of the colours. I think I would try excluding the blue first, so that the viewer's eye is not distracted from the centre.
