That's what I was thinking. Instead of cutting the fabrics though, you could just lay the black down and lay the panel on top. Then fold the bargello in half and lay it on the black about 6 or so inches over. Even if that is not the pattern you want for the thinner bargello, it would at least give you an idea of what it will look like.

You may also want to audition some of the other lighter colors as a border between the panel and bargello.

I love the colors you chose for the bargello to match the panel. This will be a beautiful quilt when done.
