I use canned Northern beans, add enough water to completely cover beans, squirt of mustard (regular here, but DH likes the spicy stuff), dump in brown sugar to taste (I like mine sweet, DH doesn't), salt and pepper. Add one ingredient, taste and repeat until it tastes good to you. If I don't have bacon or ham to throw in it that's not a problem with flavor. One of the dishes I still make because it is so easy.
