I'm in the process of making some lap quilts for my nieces & nephews out of my dad's old ties. I washed and dried the ties (in the washer & dryer) first, then opened them up and discarded the interfacing or whatever that stuff is inside. Then I ironed on a stabilizer. After that you can cut them as you need for your pattern.
