I believe you would have to pin it so heavily, that you might as well add a few more, and call it basted :wink:
If it is not pinned well, even using a basting stitch, your layers are going to shift as you move it around JMHO :D:D:D

Truth is I hate pinning. Well my carpal tunnel flares up so I avoid it.
Thread basting is not so bad but machine would be sooo much better.
There has to be a way. I keep hoping. Come on guys and gals, put your

Believe me, I wish that I did have the magical answer to your question. I have fibro and arthritis in my hands, so anything to keep from having to pin would be great for me too!!! :D:D:D
I have done a lot of searching online... and have found nothing for basting a quilt using a domestic machine, without using pins or basting spray... There are those plastic tacking things... but I am not sure just how easy on the hands it is taking them back out...
The problem is this, when you push, pull, shove and manhandle that quilt sandwich through the machines throat, there isn't anything to keep the layers from shifting around...
For smaller quilts, the John Flynn quilting system would work. Some buy longer poles for it and have quilted king sized quilts. You can't quilt a LOT of area at a time, BUT you do not have to hand baste except on the ends of the leaders. You can pick these up used for well under $100 on ebay, even here on the board.
