The slider is a very slick sheet that is put on the bed of the sewing machine it allows the quilt to glide easily over the bed surface of the machine, there is a small hole which the needle passes through, it covers the feed dogs which must be lowered or covered with a plate. These are usually about 12 by 10, (can't remember the exact size) and can be trimmed to fit the bed of the machine if the machine bed is smaller. The slider has a bottom which tends to adhere to the machine bed without tape etc. The silicone mats for the ovens apparently need to be taped down but are larger, but I don't know how well they compare to the real thing. I have a supreme slider and think it works well. :-D
