i don't believe there's a hard and fast answer to this. i think it depends on the financial strata of the area in which it will be sold. for example, in a good, solid working- to - middle-class area where people realize it's handmade, i think $40.00+ is a fair price. but if you wanted to sell the same quilt in a ritzy area, like greenwich village in nyc or the hamptons (or someplace like that) you could expect to get a LOT more. i've seen dreadful stuff sold for ridiculous prices because they were 'primitive'. lol!check out what other quilters in your area are asking (and getting - two different things) and ask what people are paying. also remember that this might not be a great xmas- present year for anyone, with the economy the way it is. even the stores are expecting a terrible xmas. whatever you decide, presentation is everything. we all wish you lots of good luck and let us know how it works out.
