I've noticed the comments in this thread are way past the date it was originally started, so I'd like to add

I'm about to try this method on my Puffin quilt. 4 years ago we went to Alaska, I bought some Puffin fabric, and had a complete quilt cut out. Then I was in a car accident, and though I've retained the knowledge needed to continue making quilts, and I've adapted my machine sewing to my abilities, I did not look forward to adapting my handwork. This is the answer! It is the first quilt attempted after the accident and in my new sewing room.

OMG, THANK YOU again! I hope you realize the time you took to make this tutorial and post it, helped at least one person continue living her life with joy!
