For what it's worth - I just tied a quilt for the first time (baby quilt) and was told to use cotton as anything else would be too slippery and wouldn't hold a knot.
Have you tried a reefknot? Also known as square knot. Does not slip. Google reefknot how to. I use it all the time with all sorts of thread, never had a problem.
