I just returned from my second trip to Texas in one month and both times I carried my machine in my carry-on suitcase. One out of the four times I went through security they asked me to take it out but even then they let it pass through after looking at it. I say take it with you. I had lots of fun sewing on both trips and it was worth lugging in my carry-on.
