From my hospital volunteering days, I'd say that washed or not washed, the hospital will still sterilize them before letting them touch the body of a baby that probably has a weak immune system. And such a thing will be a boost to the frantic parents who need to know that someone is thinking of them.
I made all different sizes of fleece, and knitted blankets for CHOP (Childrens Hospital of Pennsylvania) in Philly. They were thrilled with any size or fabric. But check with the hospital.
