I would use a solid colored spread on the bed, and use the quilt on top of that as a decorative accent. You could try putting it on your bed "on point" and see how that looks. Or you could fold it and keep it over the foot of the bed. With a plainer, solid spread or duvet, the quilt will still be your focal point.

I have done that in a bedroom and really like the look of the folded quilt across the foot of the bed. If the spread is plain, your eye goes immediately to the quilt.
