You might look at garage and yardsales. I used to find that buying old clothes meant great recycled buttons (often the buttons were worth more than the rest of it). I can buy an old stained button-down shirt, cut off the buttons (which are like new) and reuse them. Best of all, you usually get the correct number you need to make a shirt. None of the 2 or 3 buttons to a card thing.
I ditto this one. I also string the matching ones together as I remove them from the shirts. Makes them so much easier to use later. I have quart jars full of buttons this way.
