Hi Amy, I think Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day Books are one of the easiest out there for directions etc. (no affialliation) I have several of her books. Also ask you local quilt shop for help. Most people will assist you in picking out fabric. When I first sstarted quilting that was my problem. I tended to pick out fabric that was considered "medium" in color. Keep in mind you want contrast, light,medium, and dark. Good Luck Marge
