I use 2 1/4" strips, then use a 3/8" seam to sew it to the quilt. When I turn it, it fits perfectly.
BTW, I machine sew all my bindings, so I sew them to the back of the quilt, then turn them to the front and topstitch in place.
I have a question about that. I was planning to do the same the next time but if you have a quilt with points and no border, does it cut off some of your points? If so is it really that noticeable? I think if I had something with points on the outer edge I would just put a narrow border on it but if I didn't have enough fabric I would have to somehow not do that. Maybe cut the backing and batting to 1/8" bigger?
