I use peanut butter on the old fashioned little wooden spring traps. I have a pest service come in also with those little boxes -- but there are always some in the traps. If you can't stand dumping the dead mice -- just buy more traps. In a summer place closed all winter you learn to expect critters.

I store blankets and fabrics in wooden chests. -- have your DH build some out of plywood if he is handy

Also -- put poison bait outside your house -- lean a small board against the foundation so the rain and larger animals can't get at it and the mice can run in a nice darl "hallway"
