It started as a means for Donna Sue Groves, of Adams County, Ohio, to publicly honor her mother, Maxine--a skilled quilter of several generations. The community got together and created a driving trail of 20 painted quilts--to bring her idea to fruition and to draw a bit of tourism to an isolated rural area.
Many of them are very personal--replicas of family quilts that often are still in the farmhouse.
Over 3000 quilts have been painted and hung on barns and other buildings, with trails in 29 states and also Ontario, Canada. It is pretty amazing!
