Yip -- me, too. Besides all the problems you'd run into if you didn't, it just plain looks better to quilt the border.
My batting says it can be quilted 10" apart without problems. You could do a straight line from the quilt to the outer edge every 10" or so (check your batting instructions). I don't think I'd like that idea, but would do in a pinch.
