I live not too far from the Wyoming border, about an hour from Evanston. I know that Wyoming has a state quilt guild, and I found a list of all the guilds in the state:

One of these may be close to your location, and that's always a good place to start. I can just see all the ladies perking up and their hands rubbing together when someone says "I'm a new quilter..." And if you ever cross over the western border, stop by for a visit anytime!!
