I just finished one a few weeks ago for my daughter. Was just supposed to be a throw, but the thing is huge! Anyhow, I snipped a little at a time just as you suggested while watching TV. I would sew 2 rows together and then snip, sew 2 more rows snip some more. Went well, came out great and my hands didn't get sore.
