I've been doing it all my life (53 years!) and my mother taught me. I came from pioneer stock, and I assume it was a style that they liked (invented?) I have a twin bed size quilt from my 28 year old son that has been washed a zagillion times, and not a single crows foot has come loose. I love the tufted look. Once you try it, you'll be hooked too.
