Here is a link to calculate your borders when you make your quilt and want to expand it, many will simply add decorative borders.

I've taken a wall hanging, and added sashing between blocks then borders and created a full quilt..or lap quilt & expand the sashing, increase the block size, add borders and you can get a queen quilt.
