I've made several flannel quilts - most often I've used Warm and Natural cotton. It makes for a heavy quilt, but very warm. I've also used a thinner batt my LQS sells - not as warm. I hear it is very cold up there in Fargo - I'm sure your friend will appreicate a cozy quilt!
