The difference is when you are paper piecing you are sewing your fabric to a design actually on the paper, once your design or block is all sewn then you tear away the paper and you have perfect points since you sew on the lines.

Machine piecing is referring to using your sewing machine as opposed to hand sewing.

And yes you are still machine piecing with paper piecing, i hope I didn't confuse you more. Check out Carol Doak website you can see examples.
