I always ask for an estimate first, if I haven't already called the shop to ask specifically. I don't have money to be "shocked" when it comes time to pay. I also shop around for the best deal, within reason. I don't want to pay $5 for a $100 job and be stuck with a broken whatever for being too thrifty either.

Can't say if that was too high or not. All areas charge differently as well as each repair person.
