I know exactly what you are saying, and I agree. That is why we all need to be informed consumers. It's just hard to know who is honest and who isn't.
That being said, ask around and find out where your friends take their machines and do some research. Decide from there.
I just wish that as business owners we could research customers before taking their items in on repair. ;-)
