For the bias, strips lift the iron to move it around rather than pushing when you press anything bias. Actually, I pretty much do that with all blocks before they are stitched together. I think spray starch would help, but don't push the iron. If they still don't behave, loosen the presser foot pressure if you can (I can't) or use your walking foot.
