Ok, let me go over the pattern a little. You have ruled the lines and now you have a smaller diamond left in the middle. Start numbering from the little diamond on the wider strips, start with 1 and so on. You might have to erase a couple of the little lines in order to let the strips overlap the correct way. Just use your finger and go along the lines and fix as needed.
Now, the side with the ruled side will be the wrong side and the plain waxed side will be the right side.
Cut a strip of fabric at 4 1/2 inches for the middle small diamond (that is the size of mine) cut one side at a 45d angle, turn and cut the other end at 45 d angle. ( I did this to conserve fabric and it is neater). this diamond already has 1/4 inch seam allowance included.
Now take the diamond and place it on the right side of the pattern (the waxed side). Pin with one of those flat flower head pins. Hold it up to the light and see that it extends at least 1/4 inch beyond all four seams, or more. Now turn it over and press from the wrong side, the side that is lined. Only press it a little, just enough to hold the diamond in that spot only. If you press too hard, your fabric will be hard to remove.
Cut your strips the size listed previously. Take some card stock and place it on the first line and fold the pattern back and make a crease on that line. Peel back the fabric of the diamond to the line, place your 1/4 inch ruler and cut the excess fabric, now put your first dark strip on the diamond, right sides together, and sew along the edge of the crease. I am using the Bernina and it has a number10 foot that has a middle blade and that runs perfectly along the edge of the crease.
Turn over and finger press on the right side and then press ightly with the dry iron, just enough to hold the strip. Turn clockwise and on the ruled side, place the card stock and crease line two, loosen the fabric, place the 1/4 inch ruler and cut the excess fabric. Place the second dark strip, right sides together and sew down the line. Be sure to sew 1/4 inch beyond the first strip. This is just like normal paper piecing except we are not sewing through the paper....
Continue the same steps over and over until the block is finished.
For my card stock, I used an 8.5x11 sheet of paper and laminated it and it works perfect for this. I can get a real sharp edge with it.
