I've seen the method you mentioned but I don't like the bias edges it makes. The method I use makes 8 hst at once.
Cut two squares, Mark on the back of he light one diagonaly both directions, stack them together with the dark square and sew along both sides of each line. Cut this square in half both directions, then cut the new smaller square on the marked lines. To determine size to cut take the desired size of finished hst times two plus one and three forths.
