We also need to be aware of what the other person might want and/or need.

If, for example, I'm thinking about making another quilt for someone - and I KNOW that they've either just put the other three away or abused them or didn't even acknowledge them - then I'm setting myself up for heartache - and the other person will not be thrilled with the gift - regardless of how much love and expense went into it.

This person might truly be happier with hay for his/her horses or a gift certificate for a motorcycle accessory - or even gift certificates to a fast food place. Or frozen pies, or cherry nut bread, or very favorite cookies.

And, perhaps, at some point in time, even a vacuum cleaner (but usually not from a significant other early in the relationship)
