Seems to me that anything you make to protect your lap from the heat is going to further overheat, and potentially damage, the laptop. The point is to increase the airflow, not decrease it. They make all kinds of laptop coolers and I'd go with one of those, just to be safe. Why risk damage to the laptop just to have a funky handmade mat?
