Boo -- I am the same way! I use 100% cotton batting to help it crinkle.

As for the pencils marks.. I strongly suggest not using regular pencils, but using quilt pencils. I used regular pencils for a while and had no trouble with the marks washing out.. then one day I used them on a quilt and they never did all wash out! PTL it was a quilt for us and not a gift and the marks are not that noticable.. in fact, I suspect you wouldn't see them if you weren't looking for them... but I know they are there! I quit using regular pencils then!
