I think the corduroy would be a durable, warm backing and need not have batting. Because of the weight you might consider using a whole cloth top, maybe woven or fleece camo. and tying it. Practicality trumping beauty.
Corduroy could back tied lap quilts or throws. The nap would help prevent slipping, as well as being cozy. Whatever you choose to do will be a blessing to someone far from home.
