Confused about one thing though. Haven't used 10" before. You said you left 1" seams to be cut. If I use 5 columns and 8 rows, and leave a 1" seam, wouldn't it end up being smaller than 50 x 80 (depending on seam size)?

Yes, it is smaller than 50 x 80...just used that figure because they're 10" squares.. It's still a good size lap quilt. Plenty large enough for a guy :) Be sure your fabric will fray when washed. I used warm and natural batting and I made the batting squares 8". I really wouldn't have had to use batting because flannel is warm but I wanted it to be "toasty"...LOL.
