I use the yellow mechanical pencils--the pencil, not the lead is yellow, bought in a package at WalMart, in the stationary aisle. The lead is very thin, and with light pressure will make markings that disappear during the quilting. Have never left the markings on a quilt for a long time, perhaps it makes a difference if the markings are fresh.
