Yep, that's what I do, actually have ten pairs that way, that I plan on replacing today.
I have to agree with this one. I don't wear out my socks very often. DH does, but they aren't expensive. I've tried to teach him to toss the ones with holes when they come off, but I always end up doing it after they've gone through the washer and dryer :)
